Malcolm Alexander Bethune, III, also known as II, 82, of Marietta, GA, passed away Sunday evening, May 1, 2016. He was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to the late Malcolm Angus and Helen Rose Bethune. Malcolm attended Fayetteville High School and Presbyterian Junior College where he lettered in football and basketball.
Malcolm was very active in civic affairs. He served several years on the Fayetteville Recreation and Parks Commission; some of those years as chairman. He also served as treasurer and chairman of the Cumberland County Easter Seal Society, as well as treasurer of the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. While working for a local savings and loan as branch manager in Spring Lake, NC, he was elected to the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce. After moving to Marietta in 1971, he served as secretary and treasurer of Optimist International.
After a long career working for one of the largest savings and loan associations, Malcolm retired from Resolution Trust Corporation. He continued to be active in retirement working for 14 years as a bailiff for Cobb County Superior Court and serving on the St. Andrews University Alumni Association, the National Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers and the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta where he was a member.
Malcolm is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Rose Bethune of Roswell, GA; his son, Christopher Alexander Bethune, also of Roswell; his stepson, Rodney Hunt and wife, Ronda, and grandchildren Haley and Natalie, all of Marietta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Hunt Bethune.
A graveside service will be held, Friday, May 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Cross Creek Cemetery #3. The family will receive friends from 9:45 to 10:45 AM at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church Street, Marietta, GA, 30060.
