With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Malcolm L. Koonce, a proud veteran and devoted member of his community.

Malcolm answered the call to serve his country shortly after graduating from Seventy-First High School. In 1973, he enlisted in the United States Army and faithfully served until receiving his honorable discharge as a Private (PVT) in 1976.

He was born on May 3, 1955, in Cumberland County to the late Charlie Franklin Koonce and Lucy Boahn Koonce. Raised in the Rockfish community, Malcolm formed lifelong friendships and deep roots that remained important to him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Malcolm worked as a plumber and in construction—trades he took great pride in. He also generously volunteered with the Stoney Point Fire Department, serving his community with dedication and a willing heart.

Malcolm appreciated life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed playing the lottery at Four Way and sharing meals at Miller's. He cherished sitting and talking with friends, listening to Celena Lindsey play her guitar, hearing Celena and Athena Quick sing, and relaxing with a cold beer in hand. His easygoing nature, warm smile, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Community Praise Assembly, 7462 Glen Raven Road (off Dundle Road), Fayetteville, NC. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Donna Clark. Malcolm will be laid to rest with military honors at Lafayette Memorial Park West (near 71st).

In addition to his parents, Malcolm was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Wayne Boahn; his paternal grandparents, George and Rosa Koonce; his maternal grandparents, Charlie Franklin and Lydia Ray Boahn; and several aunts and uncles.

He leaves to cherish his memory his brother, Mitchel Koonce and wife Sherry; nephews, Tyler Koonce (Skyler Mack) and Mitchell Koonce (Claudia Davila); nieces, Jessica Jacobs (Jordan) and Danyelle Ridley (Dr. Kevin Talton); great-nieces, Savannah Jewell, Evelyn Simmons, and Addison Simmons; great-nephews, Lane Jewell, Rory Flaherty, and Henry Koonce; and aunt, Lydia Ann Johnson.
