FAYETTEVILLE, NC- Mr. Maness Irvin Adcox, 89, passed away December 8, 2010 in Cape Fear Valley Hospital following a short illness. Maness was born February 18, 1921, in Grays Creek, NC, to the late Agnes Smith and Irvin Lafayette Adcox. He had a lifelong love of aviation and by the age of 13 was flying planes at Fayetteville area airports. Maness graduated from Grays Creek High School.
He served his country proudly as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force during World War II. His military career as a pilot took him to several states including Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Georgia, California, Arizona, and Texas. While in the USAF he attended State College in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. Maness was a flight instructor for the West Coast Air Corps Training Command.
He married Juanita McDonald Livingston of Fayetteville on December 8, 1944, at Merona Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona. They cherished 66 years together and loved ballroom dancing, gardening, and travelling. They were blessed with two children, Stephen Irvin and Mary Alexander.
Following his military service, Maness and Nita returned to Fayetteville. Maness worked with David Ray at Park Place and then went to work for Pilot Life Insurance with Harvey Oliver and Ace Parker. He also assisted his mother for several years with her beloved Agnes Adcox Nursing Home. In later years he and his daughter, Mary, ran the Nursing Home together on Highway 87 near Grays Creek until it sold in 1994.
Maness joined First Presbyterian Church in 1946 and was an active member until his death. He received "Elder Emeritus" status for his many years of dedicated service. Maness was a committed member of the Calvin Sunday School.
He served on numerous church committees but his true calling was that of Boy Scout Leader along with Wren Myers and Orva Perkins. He led many Boy Scouts of Troop 705 through the rigorous demand of merit badges including helping several attain their "God and Country" Badge and the coveted Eagle Scout Badge. He was so proud of his son Stephen who earned several badges and attained the honor of Eagle Scout under his guidance. Their troop received various state recognitions and travelled to the National Jamboree in Colorado.
Maness was a Fayetteville Lions Club member for many years. He was a fixture at the meetings and known for his "tail twisters" which raised money for the blind and for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Waccamaw.
Maness was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed a buoyant life up until the end, traveling, dancing, and telling stories. He leaves behind a living family including his wife Juanita (Nita), of the home; son Stephen and wife Nancy of Topsail Island; daughter Mary and husband Dick Gill; granddaughter Mary Margaret Gill; his step-granddaughter Melodi Borkowski and husband Thomas; and his step-great-granddaughter Caroline, all of Fayetteville.
Services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 2:00 at First Presbyterian Church at 102 Ann Street. Visitation will be at 12:30 in the church parlor prior to the service. Burial will be immediately after at Cross Creek Cemetery.
Arrangements will be handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home at 545 Ramsey St.
