Obituary

Margaret B. Pappas, 86, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2016.

Margaret was born on April 26, 1930 in Stenoma, Evrytania, Greece to Bill and Sperethoula Pappas. Her father came to America in 1912, and later followed relatives to Fayetteville in 1918. Margaret and her sister, Helen, joined their father in 1948. Mrs. Pappas was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, George Peter Pappas. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Pappas was known for her sweet, vivacious, generous and loving spirit. She was loved and cherished by all who knew her. She was an avid reader and gardener, and her intricate crochet designs won many blue ribbons at the NC State Fair. She was a lifelong member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, and Margaret and her husband, George, were instrumental in the financing and construction of the church sanctuary. Mrs. Pappas was a Member of the Velouchi Organization and a 50 year plus member of the Philoptochos Ladies Society, where she served as Treasurer for many years. She was a woman of strong faith which she instilled in her children and grandchildren. She loved helping with the Greek Festival, church spaghetti dinners, and other community fundraisers and activities, and was always entrusted with running the cash register. She is survived by three children, son Bill Pappas and wife Debbie of Raleigh, son Peter Pappas and Dr. Mary John Baxley of Greensboro, and daughter Sperethoula (Lula) Griffin and husband Dan of Fayetteville; five grandchildren Marianna P. Whitson and husband Micah of Belmont, MA, Caroline P. McCall and husband Lathan of Brooklyn, NY, George William Pappas of Los Angeles, CA, and Daniel and Margaret Griffin of Fayetteville; great granddaughter, Annie Whitson; and great grandson, Gus McCall. Mrs. Pappas is also survived by her sister, Helen P. Dais and husband George of Fayetteville as well as a large extended family. The family will receive friends Monday, September 19, 2016, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the Trisagion service at 7 p.m. at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Funeral services for Mrs. Pappas will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. Father Angelo Pappas officiating. Interment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park, 2301 Ramsey Street. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to sister and brother-in-law, George and Helen P. Dais for their devotion and loving care of the Pappas family over the years, as well as her wonderful extended family, caring neighbors and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 614 Oakridge Avenue, Fayetteville, NC 28305. Services are entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home
