Obituary

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Marvin O. "Bill" Smith, 93, of Fayetteville, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in his home. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His medals include the National Defense Medal; United Nations Service Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; American Defense Medal; Occupation Medal (Germany); Korean Service Medal with seven Bronze Service Stars; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal; and Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Smith was a member of the Lions Club of Fayetteville and worked with First Citizens Bank upon retirement from the Army. He also was a founding member of the Fayetteville Athletic Officials Association, which he belonged to for 29 years. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Williams. Private services will be held. Mr. Smith is survived by three daughters, Brenda M. Smith Stott of New Bern, Jennifer E. Smith Bauguess of Fayetteville and Kathy L. Smith Patton of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Brien E. Bauguess of Goldsboro, Andrew P. Jackson of Pensacola, Fla., Elizabeth L. Bauguess Kiniery of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Aaron Stott of Wilmington, Nathan Stott of Seattle, and Lindsey P. Blackmon of West Point, N.Y; and three great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Abigail and Emily Bauguess, all of Goldsboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boys and Girls Home of N.C., P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450.
