Obituary

Mary S. Averitt, 92, of Fayetteville, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Born on September 29, 1932, in Sampson County, Mary was lovingly raised by Mr. Willoughby and Ruth Hughes Willoughby. A proud military wife, she supported her family through every deployment and transition, always with grace and unwavering strength.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard Averitt; and her children: Shelly Averitt, who passed away at birth during Leonard's military service; Brian Averitt; Sherri Averitt Dean; and Steven Averitt. She was also preceded in death by her biological father, Curtis Sports.

Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend whose warmth touched everyone who knew her. A faithful member of Camp Ground United Methodist Church, she gave generously of her time and talents. She served in numerous capacities, including on the Administrative Council Board of Ministry, as past president and member of United Methodist Women (UMW), member of Women of Faith, president of the Golden Elite, Co-Chair of Funeral Meals, member of the Recreation Committee, the Caring Team, and the Finance Committee. She especially found joy in helping with the Festival of Lights. She was a member of the Moose Lodge where she held multiple positions.

Mary also expressed her creativity through needlepoint, crafting beautiful pillows and artwork that were treasured by many. She loved ballroom dancing and enjoyed ocean fishing with her husband and their friends. Mary was an elementary  school teacher, serving at Cumberland Mills Elementary School for over 30 years. Being in a military family, she also taught school in other places, notably in Germany. She often shared many fond memories of her time there.

She is survived by her loving grandchildren: Amanda Colson and fiancé Daniel Ray; Ashley Grantham and husband Ken; Leonard "Lee" Averitt and wife Allison; and Christian Averitt and husband Anthony Velasquez. She also leaves behind her cherished great-grandchildren: Joey, Audrey, and Bryan Waugaman; Trey Grantham; Alexander Averitt; Asher and Cruz Velasquez; as well as six great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank 3HC for their loving care and service to Mrs. Averitt and her family. A heartfelt thank-you to two special caregivers: Tina Gordon and Dee-Anna Monsour.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 20th, at Camp Ground United Methodist Church from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m.
