Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - On Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, Mrs. Mary Isabel Nunnery Edge left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior. Her final days were spent surrounded by her loving and treasured family. Isabel, also known as Izzy, was born to William Franklin and Sarah Jane Dudley Nunnery in Cedar Creek on Jan. 30, 1915. Isabel helped tend the family farm along with her siblings, Roy, Jesse, Bradley, Harry, and Lola Mae. It was on the farm where Isabel learned and cultivated the values of hard work, determination and perseverance that she would pass on to her children. On Sept. 25, 1937, she married the love of her life, Bias Melton \\"Boose\\" Edge. Melton and Isabel moved to Massey Hill shortly thereafter, first residing on Center Street. In August of 1948, Melton and Isabel moved into the home on Trade Street that Boose built with his own hands. It was here that Isabel loved, raised and cherished six children, provided loving tutelage and caring guidance to 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Isabel continued to live in the Trade Street home that she and Boose made for their family until her last days. She was always surrounded there by loving family, just the way her Melton meant for it to be. In addition to being a homemaker and bookkeeper for Melton's brick masonry business, Isabel was also active at Victory United Methodist Church. She also was a fantastic seamstress and cook, renowned for her 'plain cake.' Several of the Edge children were well-known for their active participation in Cumberland County High School sports, and, as Isabel would recount later, \\"where they went, we went.\\" Isabel remained active in Massey Hill for many years, continuing to attend sporting events within the community. She followed ACC football and basketball, even in her last days. Isabel was extremely active well into her 90s. Isabel was predeceased by all her siblings; an infant child; and her cherished husband of 52 years, B. Melton Edge. Isabel will be greatly missed by her children, Junior and Sandy Edge, Sara and Howard Piland, Donald Carey and Nancy Edge, Sue and Vernon Spruill, Steve and Bonnie Edge of Hendersonville, and Greg and Mary Lou Edge. Also deeply mourning her loss are grandchildren, Mary and Chris McLamb of Knightdale, Trey and Kensley Edge, Karly and Mark Walker, Howard and Christy Piland, Leta and Marshall Spain, Allen and Julie Edge of Hendersonville, Lee and Emily Spruill, Jaime and Eric Christopher of Raleigh, Christie and Richie Burlett of Hendersonville, Mark Edge and Allyson Edge of Greenville; and great-grandchildren, Emma Caroline, Ashton, Drew, Cara Lee, Mason, Jonathan, Anna Isabella, Olivia, Bryce, Keegan, Nolan, Davis, Aidan, and Molly Belle. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at Victory United Methodist Church with the Revs. Paul Smith and Maurice Lancaster presiding. The burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at their childhood home in Massey Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Victory United Methodist Church Building Fund, 404 Quality Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28306. Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville will be handling all arrangements.
