Obituary

Mrs. Mary Betty Pefley, 91, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2012, in Whispering Pines Nursing Home. Bet was born May 17, 1921, in Wadley, Ga., to the late Thomas and Ada Calhoun. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Samuel Pefley. Bet graduated from Wadley High School in 1939. She played guard on the women's basketball team. She met Sam in Portsmouth, Va., while they were working at the ammunitions factory during World War II in 1942. They immediately fell in love with each other and were married in January 9, 1942. The Lord blessed Bet and Sam to own and operate Sam's Supermarket at 319 Winslow St. for 45 years until their retirement in 1989. Bet dedicated her life to serving the Lord and her family. She was an active member of Walstone Baptist Church for 50 years, where she served in various positions as treasurer, director of WMU, pastor search committee and Sunday school teacher. Even at the age of 91, she was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and loved ACC basketball. She loved to spend time telling her grandchildren about representing her school in spelling and mathematics and that her favorite thing to do when she was young was dancing. She was a woman of great character. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother, and will surely be missed by all her friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Elaine Bradley Hayes and Husband Joe Clayton Hayes; three grandchildren; Denise Sherron, Wayne Bradley and wife Amy, and Connie Wood, and husband Todd; six great-grandsons, Allen Nunnery, Justin Nunnery, Kyle Nunnery, Austin Bradley, Butler Bradley, Colby Bradley and Carson Bradley; two great-granddaughters; Karman Wood and Morgan Bradley; and a great-great-grandson, Brantley Walker Nunnery. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, in Walstone Baptist Church, with burial following in Lafayette Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Visitation, 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Funeral, 2 p.m. Sunday in Walstone Baptist Church. Burial in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
