Mrs. Mary Davis Vurnakes, of Fayetteville, departed this life Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007.
She was the daughter of the late Pete and Angeline Hios Davis of Raleigh. Mary was born in Raleigh on Nov. 30, 1922. She graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1942. On Feb. 11, 1943, she married Peter Gus Vurnakes, also of Raleigh.
They raised their children in Fayetteville where Mary was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. She proudly served in the church choir, she was past president and member of the Hellenic Women's Club and was instrumental in starting the church's first Sunday School classes in the early 1950's. She was a past owner and operator of National Drapery Shop. Many fine homes in Fayetteville and Raleigh are owners of her finely made draperies. She prided herself in knowing that her custom made drapes were hemmed by hand. Mary was an exceptional cook of Greek cuisine. Her home was always open to her children's friends, many of whom ate many fine Greek meals there.
In her later years, she took up the hobby of painting. She was able to give each of her children one of her paintings. She displayed her artwork, along with her fellow residents at Evergreen's, at several public venues in the Greensboro area. Her paintings were also selected to be featured on printed greeting cards and calendars that were sold in that area during the holiday season.
She is survived by her children, Hedy Vurnakes Thevaos and husband Jim, of Greensboro; Angie Vurnakes of Raleigh; Bill Vurnakes and wife, Julie, of Fayetteville, and Dean Vurnakes of Hopewell, Va; She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jamie Constance Thevaos of Raleigh, Christina Elaine Thevaos of Barnardsville, James Buxton McKimmon of Raleigh, and Navy Petty Officer Steve Vurnakes of Auburn, Maine. She was also the great grandmother of Sophia Claire Muller of Barnardsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Gus Vurnakes, and her daughter-in-law, Valerie Kolidakis Vurnakes.
Olga Davis Christos of Raleigh, Jennie Davis Johns and husband, Jimmy, of Richmond, Nick Davis and wife, Hazeline, of Clemmons, and Ann Davis Sophocleus and husband, Soph, of Columbia, MD, are the siblings that survive her.
Leonidas Davis, Gus Davis, Chris Davis, Bill Davis, George Davis, and Millie Davis Prokopis are her siblings that predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at 1 pm at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. A prayer service will be held Friday evening, Feb. 23, at 6:45, at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. The visitation will follow from 7 to 9 pm.

Mary possessed a strong spirit. She instilled this spirit to each of her children. She fought the good fight. May her memory be eternal.
