Obituary

Mrs. Mary Butler Yarborough, of Fayetteville, died peacefully in her home Friday, Oct. 30, 2009. Mrs. Yarborough was born at Brookside Farm, March 30, 1910, to the late Robert L. and Minnie B. Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Wilson F. Yarborough Sr.; two sisters, Margaret Peck and Elizabeth Graham; four brothers, Gordon, Floyd, Tom, and Kesler Butler; and a great-grandson, Bob Waren. Mrs. Yarborough graduated from Gray's Creek High School as valedictorian of her class and continued her studies at Pineland College in Salemburg. After her marriage in 1928, she was active in the management of Yarborough Motor Co., as well as other business interests. Mrs. Yarborough participated in civic, political and social activities throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Chaminade Club, and served as a volunteer for Highsmith Hospital, the USO and the Red Cross. Mrs. Yarborough was a generous supporter of Methodist University, Cape Fear Botanical Garden, Myrover-Reese Fellowship Home, Cumberland Community Foundation and Fayetteville Animal Protection Society. Mrs. Yarborough, affectionately known as Kitty, was a remarkable lady of beauty, wit and intelligence. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Wilson F. Yarborough Jr. and Charlotte, Ramon L. Yarborough and Virginia of Fayetteville, and David B. Yarborough and Gail of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her faithful friends and caretakers, Helen Capps, Hazel Beckwith, Maggie Adams and Virginia Smith. Mrs. Yarborough was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the church. A visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, from 4 to 6p.m. at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. The family requests memorials be made to any of the organizations she supported. Service arrangements are entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
