Mavis McLaurin Godwin, 89, died Sunday, May 29, 2016 surrounded by her daughters.

Mavis was born March 31, 1927 in Cumberland County to the late Arch and Blanche McLaurin. Mavis was a lifelong resident of Eastover and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Mavis worked for many years at Sears, retiring from Red Apple Supermarket. She spent her retirement years working with and selling ceramic pieces along with her sister in-law, Ruth McLaurin. She loved working on crossword puzzles, reading and cheering on her Duke Men's Basketball team.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Godwin. She is survived by 2 daughters, Sharon Simmons of Cary and Debbie Elliott (Paul) of Ormond Beach Florida; brother, E.O. McLaurin of Eastover; 2 grandsons, Paul M Elliott Jr, (Jessica) of Winston-Salem and Crosby Elliott of Boston, MA; 2 great-grandsons, Cameron and Max; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at Salem United Methodist Church in Eastover at 11:00 am Wednesday, June 1st. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service in the church parlor.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a Memorial gift be made to a charity of your choice.
