FAYETTEVILLE - Lt. Colonel Retired U.S. Army Michael Rompilla, 89 of Fayetteville passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016 in Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital.

Mike served with the Merchant Marines in the South Pacific Theater and China. He graduated from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida in 1950 with a business administration degree. He served 6 overseas tours in Europe, the Middle East and Vietnam. His last assignment before retiring in 1972 was Chief of the Counterintelligence Branch, HQS USAREUR, Heidelberg, Germany. After retirement, Mike was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Federal Air Marshal and Security Inspector. The family will receive friends at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Doreen Rompilla and daughter, Romayne. He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Shari DelDo of Fayetteville; sisters Ethel Rompilla of New York and Dolly Skrula of New Jersey; 6 grandchildren, Adrienne, Stephanie, Jennifer, Michael, Caroline, and Jenny; 11 great-grandchildren.
