Obituary

Retired US Army Sergeant Major Nathan C. Bowen, Jr., 72, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Mr. Bowen was born August 24, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Bertha Mae Lackey and Nathan C. Bowen. He was retired from the US Army after a 22 year career; he was a Special Forces soldier and served two tours during the Vietnam War. He also worked for another 20 years in Civil Service at Fort Bragg. Mr. Bowen was a member of the Special Forces Association, Knights of Columbus, the National Rifle Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and an honorary member of the Purple Heart Association. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 11 o'clock am in Jernign Warren Chapel by Chaplain Roy Hill. The burial will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park West on Raeford Road, with military honors. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. Nathan was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, James, David and Paul Bowen. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Renate E. Bowen of the home; two daughters, Patricia Pittman and husband Greg of Linden and Evelyn Rhodes of Hope Mills; a son, Kenneth M. Bowen of Zebulon; 5 grandchildren, Kaylee Limbert, Brittany Pittman, Sydney Pittman, Madeline Bowen, and Landon Pittman; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Calob and Michael Limbert; and three sisters, Carol McCracken of Midlothian, VA, Jackie Virag of Bedford, OH, and Sharon Kokoruda of Cleveland, OH.
