Retired Army Staff Sergeant Negil \\"Barney\\" Barnett, 72, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 30, 2007 at 12:30 pm in the Jernigan Warren Chapel. The burial will follow at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Barnett was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a retired Army staff sergeant and engineer with civil service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess L. and Daisy Johnson Barnett, brothers, Douglas and Richard, and a sister, Sylvia Jean. He is survived by his wife, Gisela Barnett of the home; three daughters, Linda Barnett of Columbus, SC, Debra Chmielewski of Phillipsburg, NJ, and Janet Vazquez of Wilmington, DE; three sons, Michael Barnett of Parkton, Timothy Barnett of Fayetteville, and David Barnett of Fairbanks, Alaska; brothers, Bill, Alvin, and Linol; sisters, Dorothy, Nellie Ruth, Shirley and Carlene; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 pm Thursday evening, March 29, 2007, at the funeral home.
