FAYETTEVILLE - Mr. Paul W. Smith, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

A private service will be held.

Paul was raised in the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh; was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill; and was a Navy veteran of WWII. He also was an exceptional, champion golfer.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Smith Sheppard.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Smith; daughter, Kimberly Smith Wehinger and husband Edwin Edward Wehinger Jr. of Wilmington; 3 grandchildren, Edward Paul Wehinger, Callie Kelly, and Birch Lee Sheppard, all of Wilmington; 3 great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Todd Sheppard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Methodist Home for Children or Christ United Methodist Church.
