FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Peggy S. Powers, 80, of Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Born Martha Delane Swain in Shallotte on Aug, 7, 1929, to Laura Hewett Swain and Wesley Levi Swain, she was know to all as Peggy. After she spent her childhood years in Shallotte, the family relocated to Spring Lake. She attended the high school program at Campbell College in Buies Creek, and earned her diploma with the graduating class of 1946. Married in 1948, Peggy spent the next 36 years of her life as a devoted wife to her husband, C.C. Powers Jr., and as a loving mother to her two children, W.C. and Laura Lea. She was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Spring Lake, a charter member and Past Matron of Spring Lake Chapter No. 333, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Cape Fear Shrine No. 8, White Shrine of Jerusalem in Fayetteville. In 1984, the untimely death of her husband thrust her from the role of homemaker into that of business owner, when she assumed the responsibilities of president of Powers-Swain Chevrolet Inc. By preserving the established foundations of honesty, integrity and true caring for her employees, her customers and her community, Peggy quickly earned a reputation as an astute business person among her peers. In 1994, failing health caused Peggy to step down from her day-to-day business duties, but her care and concern for it and her love for its employees never ceased. She is survived by her son, W.C. Powers and his wife, Bunny Powers, of Fayetteville; her daughter, Laura Lea Vooris and her husband, Tom Vooris, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Amanda Jones and husband Tim Jones, Rachel Powers, Conner Vooris, Sydney Vooris and Erika Vooris. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Spring Lake, 201 S. Main St., with the Rev. Herman Autry officiating. Burial will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, June 14, 2010, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey St., in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Spring Lake, 201 S. Main St., Spring Lake, NC 28390. The family is humbled by the extraordinary outpouring of sympathies, condolences and acts of love extended to us during the time of our great loss, and we wish to extend to each and every one of you our most sincere and deepest appreciation. We pray God's most gracious blessing upon you all.
