Philip Alan Green of Hope Mills, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 13, 2016.
A celebration of life service, officiated by Rev. Clay Boyd, will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at First Christian Church, at 3:30 pm with visitation from 4:00 - 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall. Philip was born in Sterling, Kansas in 1941. Being part of a transient military family, he moved many times during his childhood and attended many schools. Looking back, he felt very fortunate to have been able to experience living in so many US locations. He was a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, with a Bachelor of Music Education, and taught music, band, and chorus in both Virginia and North Carolina for over 25 years. He was also a Golf Coach, Wrestling Coach, and Basketball Referee. He was an incredibly talented musician, his marching and concert bands receiving the highest honors at band competitions over the years. He had a special love for Drum and Bugle Corps competition, and traveled with his family and school drum majors to visit the International Championship as often as possible. He was a former member of the Highland British Brass Band, Regiment Band of the 11th NC Troops, Fayetteville Symphonic Band, and Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Philip was an avid golfer. He had been a licensed pilot earlier in life, and his love of flying parlayed into building his own model airplanes and flying them competitively. He also played tennis, table tennis, and bridge. He was active in various local theatres, his favorite being "Oklahoma". He was a voracious reader and expert on all things Ian Fleming/James Bond. He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Fay Kenyon Green and Barbara Gail Green, of Hutchinson, KS, and his sister, Marcia Green of Spartanburg, SC. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, also his childhood sweetheart, Jane Green, of Hope Mills; his daughter, Stacey Green Tracy of Apex; his brother James Green and wife, Pamela Barefoot of Jamesville, Virginia; his nephew Brian McGinness and wife Terry, of Brookeville, MD; and his much loved granddog, a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Rafferty. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Christian Church, Fayetteville, NC. Arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
