Obituary

Master Sergeant (Retired) Philip Leo Harrison, born February 6, 1932, beloved husband of the late Margaret Lee Pritchard Harrison, ascended to a heavenly plane this Thanksgiving morning after a hard fought battle with cancer. "The Sarge" as he was commonly known, was born and grew up in the inner city of Baltimore and enlisted in the US Air Force in 25 June 1951, two weeks after he graduated from Calvert Hall High School. He underwent Basic Training at Sampson AFB, New York. His first duty station was Francis E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he was trained in Communications. He then was transferred to Wold-Chamberlain Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before shipping out to fight in the Korean War in December 1951. He served in Kimpo and Seoul for over two years before rotating home to the States and on to McGhee-Tyson AFB in Knoxville, Tennessee where he met his future bride, "Margie". Margie and Philip were married on April 9th 1955 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Alcoa, Tennessee. From there, the Sarge continued his career in the Air Force as he and Margie began to grow their family. His career took him to Andrews AFB, MD, a remote assignment at an outpost in Northern Turkey, Hunter AFB, Georgia, and Chanute AFB, Illinois where he cross-trained to become an Aircraft Fuel Systems Mechanic. Later assignments included Altus, Oklahoma, Edwards AFB, California and Wheelus AFB, Libya and then back to Chanute where he became an Aircraft Fuel Systems Instructor. The Sarge retired from active duty on July 1, 1972 and moved his family to Fayetteville where he co-founded the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AF JROTC) program at Pine Forest Senior High School. For 26 years, he touched the lives of many, many young students as he taught them about Integrity First, Service Before Self and Excellence In All We Do, which are the core values of the US.Air Force. He also served as an Assistant High School Baseball Coach at Pine Forest. Sarge and Margie were married for 56 years. They are the loving parents of Lloyd P. "Flip" Harrison (wife Melody) of Midlothian Virginia; Victoria L. "Vickie" Padilla (husband Frank) of Washington DC; Sandy L. "Boo" Harrison (wife Julie) of Fayetteville; and Anthony L. "Tony" Harrison of Fayetteville. Their precious grandchildren, the loves of their lives, are Katy and Frankie Padilla (wife Tori) of Vacaville, California, Amber of Cincinnati, Ohio, Krissy (husband Ben), and Philip Harrison of Midlothian, Virginia, Meagan McCabe (husband Michael) of Stedman, North Carolina and, the youngest, Alexandra Rosebud "Rosie" Harrison of Fayetteville. "Peep" was looking forward to April and the birth of his first Great-grandchild from Mike and Meagan. As the patriarch of the Harrison clan, Sarge was a jovial, positive and caring soul. Many describe him as one of the happiest and funniest people they knew. He was always ready with a quick joke, Irish jig or folk song (some of which he actually did not make up at the spur of the moment). He was a great Airman/Sarge, Teacher, Coach, Brother, Son, Husband, Father and "Peep" who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will be held for Master Sergeant (Retired) Philip Leo Harrison on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 11:00am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with the Father Jack Kelly officiating. The burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey St. with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 6pm to 8pm and on Monday, November 28, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm. Both visitations will be held at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home.
