Richard Holmes Everett entered his heavenly home on September 21, 2026, after a brief but courageous fight with blood cancer. He spent his final day surrounded by his family in his home.

Richard had deep and abiding faith in the Lord. He was a faithful churchgoer who found strength, comfort, and purpose in his relationship with Christ. His faith was reflected not only in his words, but in the way he lived his life and cared for others. He sought to serve the Lord by serving those around him.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Fant Everett, and his father, Col. (Ret.) Frank Gibson Everett, Jr. Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia Crowell Everett, his daughters Ashley Sharp (Nate), Lauren Minta (Tommy), stepsons Will Warner (Molly), and Scott Warner, his brother Frank Everett (Janice), and his grandchildren Lucie, Jake, Everett, Gibson, Hugh, Kate, Caroline, and Elizabeth.

Richard was born in Heidelberg, Germany on October 10, 1951, while his father was stationed in Germany. Richard attended 10th and 11th grades at Fork Union Military Academy, an experience of which he was particularly proud, and graduated from high school in Alexandria, Virginia. He went on to graduate from Methodist College with a degree in Social Work. Richard dedicated his career to helping others and retired from the Cumberland County Department of Social Services, where he served as Assistant Director. He was instrumental in the development of the Work First Program and other programs designed to improve the lives of others. After retirement, he was appointed by the governor to serve on the Social Services Board.

His commitment to service extended beyond his career. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville where he served as Treasurer and Chair of Inner Club and was involved in nearly every committee. He also served his church by ushering and helping build wheelchair ramps for those in need. He was always willing to lend a hand, take on responsibility, and do whatever was needed to help others.

Richard also knew how to enjoy life and cherished the simple things. He loved spending time traveling with his wife, Tricia, and visiting his grandchildren. He treasured the mountain cabin he helped his father build, and he enjoyed paddling with the Lumber River Canoe Club. He loved to spend time outdoors, especially camping with his grandchildren.

Richard was a wonderful storyteller who could hold a conversation with just about anyone. He enjoyed sharing stories, laughing, and spending time with his family and many friends. He was always willing to listen, lend a hand, or be there when someone needed him. He cherished his many friendships and the countless conversations, stories, and memories they shared.

Richard will be missed tremendously by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his life. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, love, laughter, and devotion to those around him. His example of living a life in service to others will continue through all those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Haymount United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Cross Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 prior to the service in the church parlor.
