Fayetteville- Retired US Air Force Lt. Colonel Richard F. Sweeney, 87, of Fayetteville, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at the Rehab and Healthcare Center at Village Green.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Richard Benjamin and Ruby Tiller Sweeney, Richard served his country for 27 years in the United States Air Force including WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a pilot. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he played golf as often as possible.
Funeral services will be held graveside on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 2 pm in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, with military honors. The family will receive friends following the service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, William D. McFadyen;
He is survived by his four daughters, Florence Berger and husband, Brian, of Richmond, Diann Hackett and husband, Paul, of Richmond, Debbie Polka and husband, Walter, of Myrtle Beach, and Beverly McFadyen of Fayetteville; a son, Rick Sweeney and wife, Maile, of Redwood City, California; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
