Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Robert O. McCoy Jr., 83, of 120 Sutton St., died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in the Hospice Center. Bob McCoy was born at Highsmith-Rainey Hospital on May 25, 1928. Bob lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. He served his community in many ways from working on the board of education and community concerts to his work with the Cumberland Community Foundation and downtown revitalization. After graduating cum laude from Notre Dame University, he served as a first lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. Bob was an M&O Chevrolet dealer and a Realtor. He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Church. Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann McCoy; and his children, Robert O. McCoy III and wife Marilee, Mary McCoy, Agnes Ferguson and husband Wilbur, Anna Williams and husband Gary, Earle Edwards McCoy and wife Lorry, and Jenny Rosser and husband James; and nine grandchildren: Marie and Elizabeth McCoy, Sophie and Ann Williams, Aiden, Grace, Sean and Lilly McCoy and Will Rosser. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Marshall McCoy; and sister, Ann McCoy Kennedy. A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the social hall. A private family burial will be held at Cross Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Cumberland Community Foundation and the Cape Fear Botanical Garden.
