MSG Robert Daniel Patterson (Ret.), born on April 1, 1927, passed quietly away on Sunday, August 11, 2013. At the time of his death, he was living in Dawsonville, GA, but spent most of his adult life based in Fayetteville, NC. Robert was one of nine children of parents Melvin Eugene and Ivalene Patterson of Tazewell County, Virginia, where he spent his early years. Not wanting the life of a coal miner for himself or his family, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and relocated to North Carolina in 1944. He married the love of his life, Ollie Frances Brewster, on December 24, 1950, and was married for close to 47 years until her death in 1997. He retired from the Army on November 1, 1970, with 25 years of service, including service during World War II, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Shortly after his first retirement, Robert enrolled in Fayetteville Technical Community College, earning an Associate's Degree in Automotive Mechanics in 1973. He then returned to the workforce, this time on the Civil Service side, processing college ROTC payrolls. He retired from that position on July 3, 1989, and soon after his second retirement, became a partner in Patterson Catering with his wife, where they worked together until her untimely death in 1997. Robert loved boxing, boating, NASCAR racing, football, music, and rebuilding automobile engines. He excelled in almost everything that he attempted, and enjoyed many a harmless prank. He was predeceased in life by his parents; three sisters, Jean Stitz, Lois Wilburn, and Pauline Patton; two brothers, Jack Patterson and J.C. Patterson; and his wife, Ollie Brewster Patterson. He is survived by two daughters, Faith Pruitt and her husband, Edwin, of Dahlonega, GA; Robin Davenport and her husband, David, of Fayetteville, NC; one son, Christopher Patterson and his wife, Dorothy, of Las Vegas, NV; and two granddaughters, Megan Pruitt Wall and her husband, Dr. John 'Tripp,' of Miami, FL; and Sarah Davenport of Raleigh, NC. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Jernigan-Warren. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street.
