Rosalie Eugenia Stier Calvert Ray Fayetteville - Rosalie Eugenia Stier Calvert Ray, 99, of Fayetteville, departed this life on Thursday, December 23, 2010 in the comfort of her home. Mrs. Ray or "Gene" as she was affectionately known to her friends was born on May 14, 1911 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Daughter of the late George and Rosalie Stier Calvert, Mrs. Ray was educated in the Washington, DC public school system and also graduated from business and secretarial school there. Mrs. Ray spent the majority of her life as a homemaker, but was both civically and charitably inclined devoting her energies to many causes including the Lady Lions, Camellia Club, Methodist College and American Red Cross. Additionally, she was a founding member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the Highland Country Club and served on the Fayetteville Horse Show Committee. An ardent Republican and member of the National Rifle Association, Mrs. Ray was politically involved as well. A direct descendant of the founding family of Maryland and the Flemish Artist Peter Paul Rubens, Mrs. Ray enjoyed genealogy and was an active member of the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Dames of the Magna Charta. Further philanthropic endeavors included the restoration of two historic family homes, Riversdale, in Riverdale, MD and Kiplin Hall in Northallerton, UK. For many years, Mrs. Ray spent her leisure time travelling the Eastern Seaboard attending American Saddlebred horse shows. She was the founding principal of Ray Enterprises, and boarded horses with Claude Shiflet Stables in Asheboro, NC. She found much joy in watching her children and grandchildren exhibit at these events. Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, David R. Ray, Sr. and a son, George C. Ray, Sr. She is survived by her son, David R. Ray, Jr. and wife, Marjorie of Millboro, VA; four grandchildren, David M. Ray of Richmond, VA, Laura R. Greer of Mobile, AL, George C. Ray, Jr. of Hickory, NC and Charles B. Ray also of Hickory, NC; three great-grandchildren, Caroline E. Ray of Richmond, VA, Marjorie G. Greer and Edwin B. Greer, Jr. both of Mobile, AL. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ray Brown Officiating. Burial will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery #3. Pallbearers will include, Claude Shiflet of Asheboro, NC, Jerry Stockton of Winston Salem, NC and Williford McCauley, James McClean, John Burgess and Pete Skenteris all of Fayetteville, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
