Mrs. Ruby Rushing Covington, of Fayetteville, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, after a prolonged decline in health. Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late James Iredell and Daisy Rushing. Mrs. Covington was married to the late Da Costa "Costa" Covington for 56 years. They made their home in Fayetteville, where they raised three children. At the beginning of World War II, when young men were called to serve, the U.S. turned to its women to help with the home front war efforts. Mrs. Covington went to work in the shipyards of Wilmington to work where men once labored. Growing up during the Great Depression taught a lesson to many.
