Russell "Russ"
Richard Vona Ii
April 10, 1950 – February 23, 2025
Russell "Russ" Richard Vona II, 74, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away February 23, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Russ was born April 10, 1950, in Uniontown, PA to the late Martha and Russell Vona.
He served 38 years active duty in the United States Army, and another 13 years to civil service before retiring in 2020 from the United States Army Special Operations Command. Throughout his career, his colleagues looked up to him as a mentor and would always seek his advice. Russ selflessly dedicated himself to sharing his expertise and helping others.
In addition to his decorated military career, he was a loving husband, proud father, and a treasured friend to all those he met, always looking to lend a hand and help those in need. He willingly gave the world to his family and friends, with no expectation of recognition. Russ enjoyed taking trips to the beach with Diane. In his retirement, he took great pride in his yard and satisfaction in maintaining it for his enjoyment and that of others. He was a lover of sports and he never missed an opportunity to cheer on his UNC Tar Heels.
Russ is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Diane Vona; sons, Richie Vona, Cam Vona, Scott Vona (Julie Anna) and Michael Vona; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Sandy Pollock; many nieces and nephews, as well as his extended family in Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home, Sunday March 2, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:50 pm with a funeral to follow at 3:00 pm. Burial with full military honors will take place at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 2:00 pm. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Special Operations Warriors Foundation in Russ' name at https://specialops.org/
