Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE — Mrs. Ruth-Marie Schaedlich Rosser, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, in her home. She was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of Martha Bertha Gutzmer Schaedlich and Walter Hugo Schaedlich. She attended Rochester schools. She was baptized in Emmanuel Lutheran Church by Pastor Fredrick Reissig. A three-year diploma school, the Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing, accepted her as a student. She graduated in 1946, amid World War II. She, and others in her class, quickly became a head nurse. In 1946, a chance meeting with a chemist working for Eastman Kodak Co., James Rosser, an ex-Navy lieutenant, led to dating. She and James were married in 1949 by the Rev. Al Beck at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation. In 1950, James fulfilled his goal of attending graduate school and returned to UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1954. For Ruth-Marie these four years were enjoyable and full of learning experiences. She was a head nurse and taught LPN's at Watts Hospital in Durham. After the opening of UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, she worked there. While in Chapel Hill, the LCA congregation built a new nave/parish center under the guidance of Dr. Cooper and we participated in that experience. Eastman Kodak transferred James to Tennessee Eastman Co. in Kingsport, Tenn. There we joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Ruth-Marie realized her goal by joining the Ladies Aid Society of Lutheran Church Women in the Virginia Synod of the LCA. Later the LCA was consolidated into the new ECLA and Kingsport became part of the Southeastern Synod. During these years the family grew with the addition of Fred in 1958 and Tom in 1960. Ruth-Marie's days were filled with activities including teaching Sunday school, scouting, PTA and Red Cross nursing. After attending night school for 10 years she received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from East Tennessee State University in 1970. While working for Indian Path Hospital, Ruth-Marie received the Frist Award, Hospital Corporation of America's highest award for nursing excellence. She was elected treasurer of LCW for the Southeastern Synod of ECLA and then elected to the national board of LCW. There she served as chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, national treasurer of LCW and national president (1974-1977). After James retired from Tennessee Eastman in 1986, she and her family moved to Fayetteville, where they joined St. James Lutheran Church. There she taught Sunday school and served on various committees. Ruth-Marie continued her nursing career in several positions; she taught nursing at Fayetteville Technical Community College and at Westover High School, worked at several nursing homes, in various doctors' offices and at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. While at Cape Fear, she was selected to attend a week-long Nursing Excellence Conference near Chapel Hill.
