Samuel Thurman "Corky" Gaines, 1st Sergeant, USA (Ret), passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2011. He was 77 years old. A visitation will be held Thursday evening, April 28, 2011, from 6 to 8 pm at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in St. Patrick Church at 10 am Friday morning, April 29. The burial will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park West with military honors. Mr. Gaines is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie, and survived by his second wife, Adelia; his five sons, Mark, Pat, Mike, Alex, and Steve; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers, Warren and Douglas. Sergeant Gaines served 27 years in the Army and Marines and served in Korea and Vietnam with distinction. Before his time in the military, he played football at the University of South Carolina and was drafted by the NFL, but chose to play in the CFL.
