SFC(Ret.) Robert Eugene Hunter, 85, of Hope Mills, NC passed away Friday March 5, 2021 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Robert was born March 13, 1935 in Caldwell County, KY to the late Georgia Matchen Hunter and James Darby Hunter. He was preceded in death by seven siblings.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Renee Speller of Hope Mills, NC; his son, Eugene Hunter of Myrtle Beach, NC; two grandchildren, Romeo Speller and Hunter Speller; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert served his country honorably in the U.S. Army retiring at the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was an active and faithful member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where he previously served as a Deacon. Robert cherished the times spent with his church family and enjoyed volunteering with the childcare program and Operation Christmas Child. In 2019, Robert was honored for 30 years of service for his volunteer work with family night gatherings at the church. He was also passionate about serving his community through Operation Inasmuch. Robert's hobbies included working in his garden where he cared for his flowers and grew vegetables which he shared with his friends and neighbors. He was a talented handyman who enjoyed attending to tasks around his own home and assisting his neighbors in their time of need.

The family will receive friends on Thursday March 11 from 4-6PM at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Friday March 12 at 12PM at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive with Pastor John Cook officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Sandhills State Veteran Cemetery.
