Chief Petty Officer Retired U.S. Navy Shirley James Giles, 71 of Sanford passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Shirley was born on February 7, 1946 in Havre De Grace, Maryland . Shirley was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorna Mae Giles.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Stephens Catholic Church in Sanford. The family will receive friends at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be Monday, October 9, 2017 at 12 noon in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

Shirley is survived by his wife, Loida Giles of Sanford; son, Travis Giles and wife Christine of Sanford; daughter, Maureen Mendoza and husband Shaun of Sanford; sister, Mary Giles of Havre De Grace, Maryland; brothers, Charles Giles of Aberdeen, Maryland, David Giles and wife Linda of Aberdeen, Maryland, Daniel Giles and wife Beverly of Glein Burnie, Maryland, and Allen Giles of Pittsburgh, grandchildren, Sean Giles, Hannah Mendoza, Samuel Mendoza, Ccaleb Arevalo, Mallorie Mendoza, Shaun Mendoza, Makeo Mendoza, Braylon Giles, and Avery Giles.
