Shirley Rose Shanklin, 90, of Southern Pines, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, at her residence.

Shirley was born on October 18, 1935, in Dillon, South Carolina, to the late Jack Tolar and Naomi Martin Tolar. She was a devoted military wife and mother who traveled and made homes in many places throughout her husband’s military career.

While living in Colorado, Shirley enjoyed working as a real estate agent. She also worked as a clerk at several military base post exchanges. A talented and creative woman, Shirley enjoyed remodeling homes and had a gift for sewing and reupholstering furniture. She took great pride in her work and found joy in creating beautiful and comfortable homes for her family.

Shirley was the last of her siblings to pass away. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas G. Shanklin; her daughter, Susan McIntyre; and her son-in-law, Jay Stirling.

She is survived by her son, Michael Shanklin; daughter, Linda Stirling; grandchildren, Andrea Sessions, and Julie Seitz; great-grandchildren Ryann Seitz, Dylan Seitz Brooke Sessions and Lauren Littlefield; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish her memory.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date in California.
