Obituary

Theodore Louis Spilman, Jr. went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on June 22, 1930, he was reared in Waynesboro, Virginia. He was the fourth child of Theodore Louis Spilman, Sr. and Emily Jane Moon. A resident of Oriental, NC, he had been the husband of Mary McQueen MacPherson Spilman for almost 63 wonderful years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children: Mary MacPherson Spilman Poole and her husband, Timothy Ray Poole, of Raleigh, NC.; Theodore Louis Spilman, III and his wife, Cynthia Ann Kelly, of Poway, California; Emily Moon Spilman Everhart and her husband, Guy W. Everhart, of Lexington, NC; and Samuel Hinsdale MacPherson Spilman and his wife, Karen Elaine McLamb, of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren: Mary McQueen MacPherson Poole Lucas and her husband, Dylan James Lucas of Wilson, NC; Timothy Ray Poole, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; Elizabeth Hahn Spilman of Louisville, KY; Theodore Louis Spilman IV and his wife, Kristen Brewer of Chatham, Illinois; William Douglass Spilman of Poway, California; Gaston Meares Randolph III of San Antonio, Texas; and Rosemary Carolina Spilman of Raleigh. The deceased attended the Waynesboro public schools, graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee, and attended Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. Graduated from Methodist University, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Class of 1964 (the first student to complete requirements for graduation at that university). He served for over 43 years and was still serving as a member of Methodist University's Board of Trustees. He received many accolades from this institution, including an Honorary Doctor's Degree from Methodist University, 2004; Methodist College Medallion, 1983; Methodist College Outstanding Alumni Service Award, 1975; Distinguished Alumnus Award, 1978; Charter Member of Methodist College Endowment Society 1992, and he was a member of ODK. He spent a life-time in the printing and publishing business, which included the ownership of three weekly newspapers in northeast Tennessee, where he was named Man-of -the-Year by the Tennessee Press Association in 1958. After moving to Fayetteville, he owned Worth Printing Company and started the first "quick-copy" shops, SpeediPrint, in Fayetteville. The deceased was very active in the community, as seen by his serving as: Commander of District 27, US Power Squadrons, where he received the Fayetteville Squadron's Commander's Award, 1990, 1992, and 1993. Executive Administrator, Junior Achievement Fayetteville Area 1983-1993. Member of the Cumberland County NC Board of Education 1974-1986, serving as chairman 1978-1980 and 1982-1984. Member of the Fayetteville Salvation Army Advisory Board 1978-2006 serving as chairman in 1985. Honorary Commander, 75th Fighter Squadron, Pope AFB, 2002-2004. Joined the Boy Scouts of America at the age of 9 and served this organization in many capacities for 74 years, including Eagle Scout with three palms, Den Mother, Webelos Leader, Scoutmaster, and Chairman of the Kia Kima District. He was recognized with the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, and 50 years of Service Award. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Master at age 30 and strived to live a Christ-Centered Life since that time. Served as Deacon and Elder of MacPherson Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC for many years; and later as Elder in both Church of the Open Door, Fayetteville, and in Pamlico Presbyterian Church, Oriental, NC. He also served faithfully as a member of Gideons International since 1964, holding many state and local offices in Fayetteville and in Pamlico County. Visitation will be held at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Saturday, November 9, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, at MacPherson Presbyterian Church, 3525 Cliffdale Road in Fayetteville, NC, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the church.Visitation will be held at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home on Saturday, November 9, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, at MacPherson Presbyterian Church, 3525 Cliffdale Road in Fayetteville, NC, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the church.
