FAYETTEVILLE- Mr. Thornton W. Rose, Sr., 90 passed away on Tuesday February 14, 2012 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
He was born on July 4, 1921 to Walter Watson Rose and Lillian G. Thornton in Winston-Salem, N.C. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem in 1939.During World War II. he served with the 10th Combat Cargo Squadron in the China-India-Burma Theatre of Operations. The mission of the 10th Combat Cargo was to drop supplies to units operating behind enemy lines. At the end of the war he went to N.C. State University and upon graduation worked for Carolina Telephone until his retirement in 1985. He was awarded the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was a member of the board of trustees at Fayetteville Technical Community College for 46 years. He was an elder emeritus at First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, N.C. He was also a member of the Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce, Fayetteville Rotary Club, U.S. Air Force Association-Pope Air Force Base Chapter, Association of the United States Army-Fort Bragg Chapter, Governors Advisory Commission on Military Affairs.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Dr. John Wright Coker, Jr., officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. at Waughtown Cemetery in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Mr. Rose is survived by his son Thornton W. Rose, Jr. of Fayetteville, daughters, Nancy Jean Rose Kaminska and husband Donnie of Fayetteville, Mary Rose Nader and husband Bill of New York, grandchildren: William Nader, Ryan Nader, Mary Ann Kaminska, Clayton Kaminska. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 39 years Betty Jean Culbreth Rose.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Third Century Fund 102 Ann St. Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
Visitation: The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service.
