Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Velma Lee Beasley Altman, 84, of Fayetteville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. She was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Johnston County to the late Rufus P. Beasley and Leacy Massengill Beasley. Mrs. Altman was the loving wife of Dr. Gardner H. Altman for more than 64 years. Together, they built and have helped pastor Calvary Assembly Church at 2512 Fort Bragg Road for more than 40 years. She touched many lives through her genuine hospitality, kind words and gracious spirit. Mrs. Altman was preceded in death by her sister, Gladys Blackmon of Four Oaks; and daughter, Connie Altman of Raleigh. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Gardner H. Altman; son, Gardner H. Altman Jr. of White Oak; brother, Carlyle of Smithfield; five grandchildren, Kelly Greer and husband Trey of Atlanta, Howard Sowell of Raleigh, Ashley Bordeaux and husband Chris of Raleigh, Gardner Altman III of Boulder, Colo., and Andrew Sowell of Washington, D.C.; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home tonight, June 11, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Calvary Assembly Church, 2512 Fort Bragg Road, at 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009. The Rev. Mark Knight, Dr. Charles Kelly, Dr. Randall Rogers and Chaplain Roy Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow in Devotional Gardens, Fairground Road, in Dunn. Memorials may be made to Calvary Assembly Church, 2512 Fort Bragg Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303.
