Obituary

Mrs. Victoria "Tori" Lilly MacMillan passed away peacefully after bravely fighting the effects of pancreatic cancer at her Fayetteville home on Wednesday evening, October 26, 2011. She was 78. Tori was a gifted classically trained pianist. Having shown musical talent at age 2 ½ she was considered a child prodigy and started formal lessons, which she called "play lessons" at 4. As a teenager living in Paris with her military parents, she studied under maestro Lazare Levi of the Paris Conservatory. Tori graduated from Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, where she studied msic with noted pianist and chamber music artist Mieczyslaw Horszowiski. In her late 40s, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from UNC-Greensboro. She gave musical performances and taught piano for many years. Sitting at her Bösendorfer grand piano Tori practice daily and filled her home on Stedman Street with beautiful classical music. In addition to music, Tori was talented in needlepoint, knitting and any kind of handwork. Tori had close ties to the U.S. Army as a n Army daughter, sister, wife and mother. She experienced both the joys and tragedies of military life, which shaped her own life. At age 8, she was evacuated from the Philippines with her family just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor and was without her father for the next five years. Her family lived in Fayetteville during World War II while her father, who commanded the 57th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), survived the Bataan Death march. He was a Prisoner of War of the Japanese for three-and-a-half years. When Tori was 17, her brother, 2nd Lt. Edmund "teddy" Jones Lilly III, was killed in action during the Korean War.
