Obituary

Walton B. Guthrie Jr. FAYETTEVILLE — Walton B. Guthrie Jr., 77, of Fayetteville, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Born in Pollocksville, Feb. 26, 1934, he was the son of the Rev. Walton B. Guthrie Sr. and Mary Ann Price Guthrie. In 1947, the family moved to Fayetteville where he graduated from Fayetteville High School, then attended Wake Forest University and graduated in 1957 with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959. Real estate was his chosen vocation and the brokerage office of Guthrie Realty was established in Charlotte. He was secretary of the Charlotte Board of Realtors from 1973 to 1976, and chaired the Multiple Listing Committee in 1975. He was director of the NCAR and a member of the Membership Policy Committee of the National Association of Realtors. In 1980, he was elected the 52nd president of Charlotte Board of Realtors and earned the distinction of being the first president in 40 years from a one man brokerage office. Also he was past president of the executives association of Charlotte and was an active member of the Lions Club. After retiring in 1994, he moved back to Fayetteville to live. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Louise Jersey Martin. He is survived by his sister, Alice Ann Maxwell and husband Jack of Sanford; two nieces, Susan M. Weunski and husband Mike and family of Sanford, and Kathryn M. Bournival and husband Jacques of Raleigh; and a nephew, Lawrence Jersey and wife Patricia, and family of Greeneville, Tenn. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at 2 p.m. in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street, where he will be laid to rest. The Rev. A. Edward Beddingfield Jr. will officiate the service. Visitation will follow the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson St., Fayetteville, N.C. 28301. . Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday in Lafayette Memorial Park.
