Over 27 years, he rose to the position of Superintendent of Mail Service, earning the respect of colleagues and the community alike for his commitment and leadership. He was a dedicated member of Second Baptist Church.

Wilbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Lora H. Barefoot; his 2nd wife, Eleanor Kimble Barefoot; his sisters, Norma, Leila, Aleene, and Lillian; and his brothers, Cecil, Earl, and James Robert.
