Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel William Eddie Bulen, Sr, 79, of Fayetteville, NC died Saturday, 18 December 2010 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Bill was born 9 February 1931 in Anderson, Indiana, to Raymond and Anna Victoria Bulen. He attended University of Indiana for 2 years before being drafted into the Army. He completed Officer Candidate School in 1954, and was commissioned in Field Artillery, serving 15 months in the Korean War. After returning home, he commanded a Nike Ajax missile battery outside of Chicago, and later became a Military Intelligence Officer, conducting Photo Image Interpretation in Viet Nam. He retired as Chief, Directorate of Research & Analysis, CONTIC at Ft. Bragg, NC in January 1973.
After retirement, he became a realtor and and then a builder in the Fayetteville area. He continued working until his death. He was active in volunteerism with Habitat for Humanity, and attended Snyder Memorial Baptist Church where he served as an usher. Throughout his life, he was involved in many professional associations and community projects. He participated in Masons, Sojourners, Lions Club and Retired Officers Association.
He was devoted to his church, his country and above all, his family. As a father, he was always involved and supportive in his children's lives, providing them with love and encouragement on a daily basis. His fortitude, his devotion, and his appreciation of life's simple things will never be forgotten.
Mr Bulen is survived by his brother Gordon Leroy Bulen of Pendleton, IN; his son, William Eddie Bulen, Jr, wife Ilona and their son Hansel Dafoe, of Proctorville, OH; and his daughter Dea Ann Hunt of Tijeras, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn Szatkowski, and his ex-wife/mother of his children Velda Leola Bulen.
Services will be at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church on Wednesday, 22 December, with military honors . The visitation is from 2-3 pm, followed by service at 3 pm. Burial will be conducted in Lafayette Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.
