William Earl Cannady took his final lap on October 20, 2026, passing away peacefully at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of love, cherished memories, and a family who will forever hold him close in their hearts.
Born on May 24, 1954 to William Blackman and Gernell Cannady, Earl lived his life exactly how he wanted: without pretense, with complete honesty, and always at his own steady pace.
To those who knew him, Earl, well known as Flop to most, was the definition of laid-back. He didn’t sweat the small stuff, and he never felt the need to sugarcoat the truth. You always knew exactly where you stood, a trait that earned him the deep respect of his friends, colleagues, and community.
Above all else, Earl was a dedicated family man. His world revolved especially around his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters. He was always there to offer support, a steady hand, or a bit of no-nonsense advice when it was needed most. He taught his family the value of keeping things simple, staying grounded, and showing up for the people you love.
When he wasn’t spending time with his family, Earl could almost certainly be found watching, talking about, working on a racecar or attending a race and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow race fans and friends. He adored the thrill of racing, a passion that brought him immense joy throughout his life. Whether he was trackside or watching from the comfort of his own home, it was the one place where his easygoing nature met his greatest excitement.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Joy Eldridge Cannady; his son, William Jeffrey Cannady and wife Rebecca; granddaughters Alyssa and Katelyn Cannady; sister Grace Cannady Hobson and husband Roger; along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents William Blackman and Gernell Cannady.
Earl will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but we take comfort in the hope of being reunited one day in God's eternal kingdom. The family invites friends and loved ones to attend the funeral service, which will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Sherwood Presbyterian Church. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sherwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
