Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army Lt. Col. William P. Mitchell, 82, of Fayetteville, died Friday, May 21, 2010, in Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg. He was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Trevilians, Va., to the late Allen Jackson Mitchell and Daisy James Arthur Mitchell. William retired from the Army after 26 years of service, during which time he served in both Korea and Vietnam, receiving multiple honors and medals including two Purple Hearts and two Silver Stars. He was also a member of Special Forces. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Village Baptist Church, and was a member of MOOA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Usher Mitchell; a brother, Lewis Mitchell; and a sister, Warwick Garfield. Graveside services will be held at noon Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, with military honors. Dr. Bruce Martin will officiate. He is survived by his wife, Betty Davis Mitchell; two daughters, Pam Alford and husband Jones of Youngsville, and Debbie Knight and husband Woody of Raleigh; two stepsons, Donald and Bill Eskew, both of Turnbull; three grandchildren, Katie McLeod, Brandi Brown and Trey Knight; three great-grandchildren, Celeste, Darianna and Gavin; and a brother, Max Mitchell of Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Monday, May 24, 2010, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
