FAYETTEVILLE - Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. William Sanford \\"Bill\\" Nelson, 69, of Fayetteville, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Womack Army Medical Center. Mr. Nelson was born in Barnesboro, Pa. He was a Vietnam veteran. He served in the Marine Corps for three years and the U.S. Army for 25 years. He received the Bronze Star. He also worked as a civilian in the Joint Special Operations Command for 17 years. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, D. Louise Nelson; and parents, Belford L. Nelson and Marion McAnulty Nelson. He is survived by children, Sherry Nelson Parent of Fayetteville, Tracey Nelson Hill and husband Lee of Fayetteville, Sean A. Nelson and wife Dawne of Oak Island; and five grandchildren, Jessica Eaton Levasa and husband Fiti, Amanda Keel Foskett and husband Rusty, Tabitha Hill, Taylor L. Hill and Jack A. Nelson; and a great-grandchild, Amadis Grace Levasa; sisters, Jane Christenson and husband Harold of Venice, Fla., and Ruthanne Pavelko and husband Robert of Northern Cambria, Pa. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, July 2, 2009, at noon in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 7020 A.C. Skinner Parkway, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256. Services entrusted to Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
