FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army Lt. Col. William J. Powers Sr., 92, of The Carolina Inn in Fayetteville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011.
He was the son of the late William Powers and Marion Powers Lingis. A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Lt. Col. Powers was born March 16, 1919. He graduated from New Rochelle High School and attended Iona College, both in New Rochelle, N.Y.. He entered the U.S. Army in March 1941 and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant upon graduation from Officers Candidate School on July 8, 1942. Lt. Col. Powers served with distinction during his 20 year military career as a military police officer and provost marshall at various assignments in the United States, Germany, France, Korea and Japan during World War II and the Korean War. Lt. Col. Powers retired from active duty May 1, 1961, at Governor's Island, N.Y., as commander of the U.S. Armed Forces Police and Chief of Criminal Investigation for the 1st U.S. Army Area. His military awards include the American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
After retirement, Lt. Col. Powers continued to serve his country in a civilian capacity as chief of security for the electronics systems division on Hanscom Air Force Base, Beford, Mass., from 1970 to 1991. He relocated to Fayetteville in 2004 to be close to family.
Lt. Col. Powers was preceded in death Oct. 3, 2011, by his wife, Dalworth L. (Dammeyer) Powers. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary May 9, 2011.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Retired Col. Dr. William J. Powers Jr. and Rose Powers of Fayetteville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and John Frawley of Frederick, Md.; grandchildren, William J. Powers III, Christy Powers Bergen, Kate Frawley and Ryan Steffy; great-grandchildren, Brooke Bergen, Kara Bergen, Kascei Witters, Heidi Witters and Valarie Dennis.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, in St. Michael the Archangel Maronite Church, officiated by the Rev. Samuel Najjar. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family would like to thank staff and management of The Carolina Inn for the care and compassion extended to Lt. Col. and Mrs. Powers during their residency.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Lt. Col. Powers.
