William H Roumillat On January 15, 1931 in Orlando, Florida, William "Bill" H. Roumillat was born to William and Della Roumillat. He had many wonderful stories of his early childhood in Florida where he described the place to look more like a rain forest than the large city it is today. It is hard for most of us to image Orlando pre- Disney World. Most of the adventures that he shared with family and friends revolved around swimming and fishing in the lakes as well as riding his horse. When he was still quite young, he contracted a serious case of the measles and due to many complications was hospitalized and so ill that he missed a year of school. The complications caused him to have some severe lung problems so his physician recommended a very different type of pulmonary rehabilitation. He recommended that Bill play the oboe because the oboe requires a tremendous amount of breath control. This rather unusual prescription led him to a life long passion for music as well as the discovery of his natural affinity for the oboe. When Bill and his parents moved to Charlotte, NC, the conductor of the Charlotte Symphony, Lamar Stringfield, noticed his musical abilities. Bill played first oboe with the Charlotte Symphony throughout his high school career. He also had the opportunity to study with Marcel Tabeteau in Philadelphia. Marcel Tabuteau is considered the founder of the US-American oboe playing. He was the first oboist with the Philadelphia Orchestra for 40 years. Bill rode the train from Charlotte to Philadelphia once a month to study with him. He acquired one of his most prized possessions from Mr. Tabuteau, his Loree oboe. His oboe was the first in a famous series manufactured in Paris and could be considered the "Stradivarius" of oboes. After high school, Bill joined the Air Force and played in the Air Force Band of the West in San Antonio, Texas for 3 years during the Korean War. Following his tour of duty, he returned home and eventually settled in Fayetteville, NC where he met the love of his life, Gilda Grey Hubbard. Six months after they met, they married her and they spent the next 55 years together. After marrying Gilda, he returned to school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his degree. They moved to Winston-Salem and were both teachers with the Forsyth County School System. While in Winston-Salem, Bill was the band director for several schools and also taught at the NC School of the Arts during the summers. He gave private lessons and played his oboe frequently. After many years in Winston-Salem, Bill and Gilda retired and decided to return to Stedman. They lived in Stedman for over 20 years and enjoyed their time together traveling between Stedman and the beach. Bill's love of the oboe was only surpassed by his great love of his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He always surpassed our greatest expectations. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 10am to 10:45am at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 11am in Lafayette Memorial Park on Ramsey Street .
