"Bill" Barbour

FAYETTEVILLE Willis Alton Barbour, 85, passed away on September 21, 2015. Bill was born on October 27, 1929, in Erwin, North Carolina. The son of Willis Carmen Barbour and Ethel Horne Barbour. He graduated from Central High School in Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1948. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served on board of the USS Tarawa aircraft carrier. Bill worked as a Real Estate Broker until his retirement in 2001. Bill was an avid sportsman and pilot. He loved fishing, hunting, golf and archery. He was the National Field of Archery Association Bare Bow State Champion. He founded and served as President of the Cape Fear Archery Club of Fayetteville. He was a member of the Phoenix #8 Masonic Lodge and Past Master of the Lodge. A former member of the Red Fez Shriners. In additon, Bill was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church for 50 years, former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Beatrice Daniel Barbour, his son, Larry Alton Barbour of Fayetteville, NC, daughter, Linda Barbour Mullis and husband, Ward Mullis of Charlotte, NC, grandson, Jimmy Alton Barbour of Zion, Illinois, sister, Shirley Barbour Deless of Streamwood, Illinois, many other nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Deryl Ray Barbour and John Ralph Barbour, and his parents. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 25, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. unitl 11:00 a.m. at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home. A celebration of Bill's life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Layette Memorial Park & Mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made to: Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 3350 Butler Nursery Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306 or to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
