Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer-4 Winston Bowman Hughes, 76, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 15, 2010, at 12 noon in Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Hope Mills with Father Tom Davis officiating. The burial will follow at LaFayette Memorial Park West with military honors. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
Mr. Hughes was a devoted husband and father. He was born in St. Louis, MO and grew up in Dale, Indiana where he married his high school sweetheart, Pauline. His parents were Reuben P. Hughes and Kathleen Noonan of St. Louis.
Mr. Hughes was a decorated veteran of the United States Army. During his military career of 33 years, he was Airborne, a Green Beret with Special Forces, and a Vietnam Veteran. He retired in 1985 as Chief Warrant Officer 4.
Mr. Hughes was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, RMA and DAV.
Mr. Hughes loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. He leaves a legacy of service to others, endless generosity, unconditional love, unbridled humor, appreciation of music, and strong commitment to faith and dedication to duty.
He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Hughes.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline; his children, Debra Bentley, Jeffrey Hughes, Patricia Smith and Jeannette Hughes; grandchildren, Cheryl Cepeda and her husband Wayne, Robert White, Jessica White, Danielle Ringgold and husband Brett, and Adam Hughes; great-grandchildren, Marcus Bentley, Bryan and Marianna Cepeda, and Phoenix Ringgold; sisters, Sue Lubarsky and Virginia Dilger.
