Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE — Wolfgang Joppich was an ordinary man, who chose to live a quiet, extraordinary life. He was born in Germany on May 25, 1945, and came as a young man to America. He joined the Army and served a tour in Vietnam. Later he made his home in Fayetteville and began the journey that would touch so many lives. Life became hard and Wolfgang found himself homeless, living in his van. Few people knew this, for he never complained about his circumstances; he only wanted to know that your life was going well. Wherever Wolfgang went, Krispy Kreme, Walmart or restaurants all over town, he made friends with that joyful smile. But the ones he cared about the most were the homeless animals. He understood their pain and loneliness; and for them he could make a difference. Each day, Wolfgang made his rounds of feeding and caring for these small creatures that few seemed to notice. Almost four years ago, he found his way to Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch, where he became a happy fixture at the back table for breakfast. After a time he moved into one of their homes on Frink Street, where he shared his life with four other men. They became brothers, not just friends. With this new life, Wolfgang began making the coffee, hot chocolate and hot tea each morning for the Inasmuch family at breakfast. There was a constant smile on his face as he did what he loved best ... serving others. During this time he met Erin Garcia and Bryant Holmes, faithful volunteers at Inasmuch and members of Westminster Presbyterian. They invited Wolfgang to visit their church and before long he was singing in the choir and totally immersed in the home he found there. At the VA, he volunteered his time visiting and taking books and DVDs to the patients. There are so many degrees of loss of this good man; the Inasmuch family, Westminster family and to every person who was blessed enough to be in his presence. We know that now he is with the Lord he gave his life and heart to years ago. We will miss him greatly but cherish the sweet memories we shared. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Michael W. Armstead presiding. He is also survived by his stepmother, Martha Joppich of Massachuesetts; a stepsister; son; his beloved brothers and sisters at Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch and Westminster Presbyterian Church Family; and the friends who shared his home, Wilbert Simmons, Rolfe Erickson and Robert Scarboro. Memorials to the memory of our beloved Wolfgang may be made to Westminster Presbyterian, 2505 Village Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28304; or Fayetteville Area Operation Inasmuch, 531 Hillsboro St., Fayetteville, NC 28301, for their Housing Fund/Shelter. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 7, 2012 at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Village Drive in Fayetteville
