Brigadier General (retired) Joseph L. Nagel, 91, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away on February 17, 2026. He was born in Elmira, NY to the late William and Elvira Nagel.
Joe was the beloved husband of Charlotte, and father to Joseph Robert “Bob,” who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Melanie Monchick (Randy), his granddaughter Mandelyn Monchick, his brother David, and sister-in-law Barbara, along with many nieces, nephews, their spouses, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Joe graduated from the Elmira Free Academy, St. Bonaventure University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the U.S. Army War College. He had a thirty-year distinguished military career, retiring as a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, and continued to be involved in military affairs and community up to his death.
After retiring from the Army, Joe committed himself to his faith, family and serving others. In addition to taking wonderful care of his wife of 67 years, he was involved in many local organizations including: the Association of the United States Army, The CARE Clinic, Fayetteville Area Habitat for Humanity, The Miliary Officers Association of America, Seniors Call to Action Team, The Ft. Bragg Community Foundation, St. Ann’s School Advisory Board, St. Patrick School Advisory Board, St. Patrick Church Human Concerns Committee, St. Michael the Archangel Parrish Council, the Knights of Columbus, Four Season’s Wildlife Association and Old Soldiers Club.
Joe had a wonderful curiosity and special place in his heart for animals, nature and those who needed a friend. As a young boy he loved to fish and hunt, more for the joy of being outside than anything else. Throughout his career, Joe was able to travel and take his family to interesting and exotic places. His dedication to his beloved Scottish terriers included daily drives in his big red truck around his neighborhood making sure all was in order.
His family, his church community, and extended friend network brought him the greatest joy. Thanks to all of his caregivers and friends who came from near and far to see him when he could no longer travel and to those who sent prayers. The family wishes to especially thank Allen, Aimee, Adrianne, Ashley, Besty, Erika, James, Jim, Lashalle, Lew, Marina, Ralph, Roxy, Susan, Home Instead, the Womack Executive Medicine team, The Carolina Inn in Fayetteville, and the UNC Division of Cardiology.
