Brett Howe Davis, 43, of Fayetteville, NC, went to be with the Lord from his home early Friday morning, April 11, 2025, after a lifelong battle with a rare genetic disease called Friedreich's Ataxia. He was born on January 4, 1982, in Fayetteville, NC, to John Richard Davis, Sr. and the late Terry Lynn Sandrock.
A fighter from birth, Brett overcame countless obstacles and far exceeded the life expectancy given to him when he was diagnosed as a teenager. His life was never defined by his illness but by his resilience, strength, and courage. He earned a degree in computer programming and lived a life of determination, inspiring many including his older brother and two nephews.
Brett shared a deep bond with his mother, whose passing in 2020 profoundly affected him. She, along with his father, was a constant source of love and encouragement, always reminding him to keep fighting and caring for his health.
He lived a full life in fewer years than most, filling every moment with purpose, joy, and love. Some of his happiest memories were spent at Atlanta Braves baseball games, especially one unforgettable day organized by his great-aunt Diane, where he met legendary players Chipper Jones, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine. He shared that experience with his grandmother, stepmother, and great-aunt—three women who brought him immense joy.
For many years, Brett was an avid NASCAR fan, cheering passionately for his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and attending several races. He also loved college basketball, proudly supporting Duke, and made a tradition of watching Super Bowl games with his uncles, Jeff and John.
Brett found joy and peace in the outdoors—fishing, hunting, and target shooting with his dad—and in strength training, spending countless hours at the gym and exercising at home with his dad and close friend, Alex. He also enjoyed listening to a variety of audiobooks, especially books of the Holy Bible, which brought him comfort and strength in quiet moments.
Together with his father and stepmother, Brett attended many Ataxia conferences across the country. There, he formed lifelong friendships and met his special sweetheart. Even as the disease progressed, Brett never gave up hope. He remained proactive about his health, constantly searching for ways to stay strong and extend his life and never stopped trying to participate in clinical trials—always with the hope of helping others as well.
Brett found strength and inspiration in the Rocky movies, often returning to one quote that reflected his own journey:
“It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
And that's exactly how he lived—with grace, humor, and a heart full of love, always moving forward, no matter the challenges.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:50 on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.
Brett is survived by his father, John Richard Davis, Sr.; stepmother, Melissa Davis; older brother, John Richard Davis, Jr. and wife, Cindy; and two nephews, Jacob and Troy, who will forever carry his memory forward. Though his time here was short, Brett's strength, joy, and unwavering spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him.
