Buford Horne Obituary

Mr. Buford (Bob) Horne, 98, passed away peacefully in his home with family, early Christmas morning, December 25, 2020.

Mr. Horne was born in Yazoo City, MS on September 15, 1922. He joined the Army at an early age and was stationed at Camp Mackall, part of Fort Bragg, as a paratrooper instructor when he met his bride, Willie Mae Britt of Lumberton. When he was honorably discharged from the Army, they married in 1946 and moved to Fayetteville in 1956 where he has remained.

Mr. Horne is well known in the area as an accomplished auto mechanic: one of the best “transmission men” around, according to some. After working for several auto dealerships, he spent 25 years in Civil Service at Fort Bragg as a Motor Pool Supervisor.. After retirement in 1988, Mr. Horne drove school and activity buses for Southview schools and was always a fixture at Southview sporting events as he drove the athletic bus and attended all their games. He enjoyed school sports, fishing, dancing, and joking with friends; but most of all, he enjoyed his large family.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife in 2010, Mr. Horne is survived by daughters Claudette Horne Walker (John) of Birmingham, AL and Phyllis Horne Watson (Melvin) of Supply, NC; and sons Kenneth Horne (the late Yvonne) of Garner, NC; Robert Horne (Catherine) of Willow Spring, NC; Wallace Horne (Ann) of Tabor City, NC; and James Ours of Winston Salem, NC; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.  He is also survived by one sister, Margaret Fulcher of Vicksburg, MS and one brother, Kenneth Horne of Steilacoom, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a private funeral service will be held for family members only. Burial will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens.

The Horne family wishes to thank all those for the outpouring of love and sympathy shown to our family during this time of grief and remembrance for such a wonderful man.
