CSM Tom Vernon Fulton, age 93, of Fayetteville, NC, passed away on Saturday, 26 April, 2025.
A native of the South Carolina Low Country, born on October 9, 1931, in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late Thomas Rushon Fulton and the late Katie T. Powell Fulton and husband of 66 years to the late Guinevere Gentry Fulton. Tom spent two years in the US Navy before deciding he was more of a land warrior than a sailor and decided to enlist in the US Army. He had a long and illustrious 30-year career serving multiple times in Germany and Austria as well as with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam and the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. While in the 82nd Airborne he deployed to various hotspots including the Dominican Republic to combat a civil war. In the 82nd, he served as a platoon leader in the 505th, a company First Sergeant in the 2nd/325; as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major for the 2nd/325 and as the 2nd Brigade Command Sergeant Major.
During his military career he received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit. He was a master parachutist and combat infantryman.
CSM Tom V. Fulton was deeply committed to the moto “Duty, Honor, Country”. Strong, effective leadership was his calling in life. As a military leader he served many years as the Head Usher at an 82nd Airborne Division chapel and attended chapel services every week when not on mission with the 82nd setting an example for his troops to honor God while serving in the Army.
At the age of 48, Tom retired from his Army career and began a second career as the unpaid guardian “Mayor” of Eureka Springs where he and Guin lived just off Fort Bragg. Every year he planted a large vegetable garden for distribution to widows and to other neighbors. He patrolled the neighborhood daily in his red Subaru truck making sure there was no one that needed help and ensuring the neighborhood thrived. He was known and loved by all.
Survivors include twin brother Sam Fulton of Leesville, LA; son, Tim (Kathy) of Fort Mill SC; two grandchildren, Jonathan (Tracy) Fulton of McLean VA and Kristina (Kevin) Williams of York SC; eight great grandchildren, Isabella Fulton, James Fulton and Thomas Fulton of McLean VA and Hallen Williams, Hazel Williams, Gwenevere “Winnie” Williams, Thatcher Williams and Nell Williams of York, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.
