Carey Velmont "C.V." Downing

Carey Velmont “C.V.” Downing, 95, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

C.V. was born on December 1, 1928, in Cumberland County to the late Carey and Mary Jackson Downing.

He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a farmer and businessman where he co-owned two auto parts stores. He was a member of First Baptist Church. C.V. enjoyed fishing in the water surrounding Harker’s Island and Cape Lookout.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church on Anderson St. The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 am in the Memorial Lounge prior to the service.

In addition to his parents, C.V. was also preceded in death by his brothers, Neill Downing and Carlyle Downing; sister, Yvonne Downing Garth; grandson, Samuel David Carver; and his daughter, Lynne Downing Carver.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joy H. Downing; sons, Carey V. Downing Jr. and his wife, Connie, and David Neill Downing and wife, Wendy; grandchildren, Jonathan Heyward Downing, Carrie Grey Weiss, and Sarah Elizabeth Downing; and great grandson, Calvin Grey Weiss.
